"¿Esto?" El Tryker se quitó las gafas y se las puso en la frente. Sus ojos estaban rodeados por unos anillos brillantes, mientras el resto de su cara estaba cubierta de una mugre gris. "Oh es un FRED. Un autómata limpiador de ventanas sumergido." El cliente, un viejo Tryker un poco fondón con cejas pobladas miró irritado a la gran jaula ante él. "Hmm ¿Funciona?"
El inventor se colocó junto a su aparato y puso una mano sobre él como si estuviera presentando un bodoc gordo que quisiera vender a un carnicero." Lo pones junto al agua cerca de los apartamentos Tryker de los cuales quieres limpiar las ventanas por fuera. Ya sabes, para eliminar todas esas algas y conchas. Pones algunos peces - disponibles por separado - en esta jaula y luego usas este cabestrante para hacerla bajar despacio hasta que se acopla a la ventana sucia con estas ventosas." El Tryker más viejo levantó una ceja. "Entonces usas esta manivela para..." El ingeniero se dirigió a un segundo y enorme aparato conectado a la jaula a través de unos enormes cables; parecía un enorme barril con una manivela enorme en él, "...aplicar una pequeña descarga eléctrica a las algas y peces. No sólo hace perder la adherencia de las algas a la ventana, también estimula a los peces para que empiecen a comerlas. Las arrancan literalmente de la ventana. El resultado: una ventana perfectamente limpia ¡Sin ningún Tryker submarinista!"
El cliente asintió despacio. "¿Son los peces reutilizables?"
"Ummm... bueno, todavía lo estamos probando. Por el momento los resultados de limpieza no son los mejores, pero los peces están deliciosos tras ser frito por las descargar bajo el agua. Así que son reutilizables... de alguna manera". El cliente no parecía convencido. "Peces fritos no son precisamente lo que estaba buscando. Pero, ¿Por qué se llama FRED?"
El ingeniero se rascó la cabeza. "No sé. No pude encontrar un acrónimo adecuado, así que lo llamé FRED".
